While God of War Ragnarok has been one of the most high-profile games of the year, the development of the newest God of War was not without its fair share of setbacks. Ragnarok was previously subject to multiple delays, originally being scheduled for a 2021 release before being pushed back. The game’s success has already been apparent with high sales numbers and even a nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Now, God of War Ragnarok is breaking franchise and Sony records.

A new reveal from Sony has confirmed that God of War: Ragnarok sold a staggering 5.1 million copies between the PS4 and PS5 versions within a week of the game’s launch. Sony confirmed that Ragnarok has not only set a franchise record for God of War, but now stands as the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation game. Sony’s first-party record was previously held by Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2, selling over 4 million copies in its release week, while the 2018 God of War reboot held its franchise record.
Ragnarok has already become a ratings darling among both fans and critics with many ranking it among both the best of the year and on Sony consoles. Ragnarok has seen equally high praise to its predecessor with both God of War games boasting a 94 on Metacritic. The game has already seen recognition from award shows as well, receiving nominations in 10 different categories for next month’s Game Awards. Ragnarok’s 10 submissions lead the annual awards ceremony in total nominations for a single game.
God of War Ragnarok looks to stand out in a year that sees fierce competition from other highly-anticipated games for the honor of Game of the Year. Ragnarok will compete with several other high-profile releases for The Game Awards’ most coveted title, including From Software’s Elden Ring and fellow Sony exclusive Horizon Forbidden West. God of War Ragnarok’s massive sales success is already apparent and will surely continue to grow throughout the holiday season.
