As if proof was needed that contemporary culture had been warped by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor’s design shocked some in the gaming space when it was revealed last year. But many were swiftly convinced, finding themselves compelled by the interpretation that more closely followed mythology than his MCU counterpart. Others pointed out that this was not much of a surprise, given that Thor was featured in the secret ending of 2018’s God of War - a virtually identical segment of a scene that plays out in the sequel. Even back then, fans were speculating that Kratos would be able to wield Mjolnir, a theory that only intensified the closer release came.

However, over a month after God of War Ragnarok’s release, some fans are more curious as to why Mjolnir is seemingly so delicate at times. For context, when Thor turns up in Midgard to offer Atreus and Kratos some mead, the God of Thunder places his hammer upon their table, in a memorable moment that sees Thor question if Kratos is a “calm and reasonable person.” A Reddit post by End_Small asks “how strong is that table,” incredulous that it could “hold Mjolnir.”

The comments were as witty as one could hope, with the most upvoted claiming that “Kratos’ table has been blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physical or magical.” This, of course, refers to Baldur’s curse from the previous God of War title, which was bestowed onto him by his mother. It was broken by Atreus’ mistletoe and meant that Baldur was definitively killed as Kratos snapped his neck, heavily influencing the character development of Freya in God of War Ragnarok.

Others merely stated “magic” was why Mjolnir did not smash through the table, which is a perfectly reasonable explanation given the wild events that transpire in the Nine Realms. Although Mjolnir does not become a wieldable weapon by the player, some might think the Draupnir Spear more than makes up for it. Blessed by Brok in a touching tribute, the spear reminds Kratos of his Spartan training and makes a fitting addition to his arsenal.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
