2005 saw the original God of War hit the PlayStation 2, and Kratos quickly became one of Sony’s most recognizable video game characters. The hack-and-slash title brought brutal, bloody combat and mixed it with a story based around ancient Greek gods, with the successful combo spawning a wealth of sequels. 2022 saw God of War Ragnarok release across PS4 and PS5 with an older, gruffer Kratos and his young son, Atreus, taking on the mighty Norse gods. Shortly after the game’s release, Sony announced that Ragnarok was the fastest-selling game in PlayStation history.

An artist from Ireland known as mikesartwrks on Reddit has celebrated the series by creating a glorious painting of Kratos, posting a picture straight from his easel. The incredible picture captures Kratos’ rugged face, complete with the iconic red stripe against a striking red background. The replies to the artist are currently filled with praise and requests for other pop-icons to be recreated in a similar manner.
The God of War painting isn’t the first video game that the Irish artist has covered, as his profile also features stunning works based on fan-favorite assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze from Assassin’s Creed as well as a host of Red Dead Redemption and GTA 5 characters.
While the fanbase is currently thriving and coming up with creative ways to celebrate the franchise, it is looking rather unlikely that gamers will see any God of War Ragnarok DLC any time soon. Director Eric Williams recently told fans not to expect any large content additions due to the size of the game, which may come as a disappointment for those looking to see the franchise’s mythos expanded. Still, this would see Santa Monica following in the footsteps of the 2018 entry, as that game didn’t receive any additional content after the base game released.
The painting from mikesartwrks is just another example of fans showing their love for Sony’s flagship franchise. Other fans have shown their appreciation for GOW in other ways, including rebuilding the stoic protagonist’s homestead with gingerbread, and one fan has even recreated the head of Kratos in LEGO form. The future might not be clear for the God of War series, but there are dedicated folks who are keen to show Santa Monica studios that there is a huge fan base for the violent god.
God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
