In a message to Barlog on Twitter, a fan pointed out the success of God of War 2 as a great comparison for what the new God of War is going through. The original God of War 2 was released on PlayStation 2 on March 13, 2007. That’s around five months after the PlayStation 3 launch, yet no PS3 version of God of War 2 was made. God of War 2 would, of course, become a critical hit and massive success.

The user who pointed this out on Twitter says at first that “no one complained” that God of War 2 wasn’t a next-gen exclusive game when it came out on PS2. Barlog pushes back on that, however. He says that people did complain, just like they are now, but that they weren’t as visible. The proliferation of social media over the past two decades has definitely given rise to echo chambers of negativity, as well as access for harassers to target professionals within the industry.

But Barlog isn’t bringing up this point to make light of it. He again points to God of War 2 and says, “that one worked out kinda ok, huh?” In other words, for all the negativity surrounding God of War 2 releasing on PS2 instead of PS3, it turned out great. The negativity was meaningless and unnecessary. That’s what Barlog appears to be saying about the current negative response to the new God of War sequel coming to both PS4 and PS5.

It’s easy to see Barlog’s point of view. He’s experiencing harassment, not just for himself but for his co-workers. All he wants is for video game players and fans to let the game speak for itself. The platform won’t define whether PlayStation’s upcoming God of War sequel is great or not.

Barlog could have put it even simpler, of course. Harassing game developers is never acceptable. It doesn’t matter if it’s about God of War, platform wars, or any other game development subject. Barlog taking leadership of the situation is admirable, but it’s a shame he has to deal with the situation in the first place.

God of War 2 is currently in development for PS4 and PS5.
