At the time of writing, God of War’s mod collection is climbing up fast, and it’s only a matter of time before newer and wackier mods start appearing. These great God of War mods range from useful gameplay or visual upgrades to inside jokes and questionable character cosmetic changes. Some of them might even be enough to make Kratos chuckle, much to Boy’s delight.
Updated September 19th, 2022, by Sid Natividad: There is plenty more fun to be had in God of War’s PC version. In fact, the number of God of War mods just keeps piling up, which is good. That means there’s plenty of focused distraction to be had before the eventual God of War Ragnarok release.
These new God of War mods have breathed a second wind into the old game. Some of them are made for function to that subsequent playthroughs are not as daunting. Others were created purely for aesthetics. Regardless, all of them are worth checking out.
15 Young Kratos ReSkins
Kratos is a little worn out and weary in the reboot, so some players thought to bring back some of his youthful glow. By youthful glow, that means his appearance back when his hormonal rage and genocidal tendencies were unchecked. Young Kratos ReSkins brings back the earlier Kratos appearance of the past games.
The only beard here is a goatee and his jawline and musculature are a lot sharper and tighter compared to his latest dad model. In addition, the modder also included some alternative looks which make Kratos’ skin dark and his warpaint blue instead of red. Other versions include General Kratos and Fear Kratos.
14 Script Loader And Gameplay Tweaks
Think of this one as a set or collection of mods which is a godsend for PC owners who prefer a little less clutter in their file explorers. Script Loader and Gameplay Tweaks also comes with some cheats that players can toggle in case they run into potentially game-breaking bugs or glitches.
These features are:
Noclip Freefly camera Ability to skip startup intro movies Ability to disable depth of field Ability to set a custom field of view Patches to disable Windows version limitations (Windows 7)
Players can access all of these with a simple keypress. The noclip mode and freefly camera are notably useful for taking some pretty screenshots and both are easy enough to control.
13 God Of Dad Jokes
Apparently, Christopher Judge, aka Kratos’ voice and actor, cracked some mighty fine dad jokes that sadly weren’t used in the game’s dialogue. So, God of Dad Jokes remedies that shortcoming. It wedges in some of Judge’s unused Kratos dad jokes in the cinematic scenes.
A word of warning though, this mod will break immersion and change Kratos’ personality to a jokester of a dad. So players are recommended to reserve this mod for subsequent playthroughs, after they have finished the game at least once. Otherwise, there goes the drama.
12 Disable DLSS Sharpening
DLSS is a godsend from Nvidia and is arguably more important than its flagship tech, Raytracing. It’s practically free framerates since this downscaling and upscaling tech improves performance with the only cost being a negligible image quality reduction. It’s not without its shortcomings, however. Some DLSS implementations have included sharpening which can be too much.
Such is the case in God of War for PC. That’s why the mod Disable DLSS Sharpening exists. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Because in some cases and shots, the overbearing DLSS sharpening can make the game look cel-shaded with its aggressive outlines. It’s great for screenshots in this case and even general gameplay.
11 JG’s Leviathan Axe And Blades Of Chaos Recolors
Tired of the default weapon appearance? Even Kratos needs a change of scenery and attire from time to time, so the JG’s Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos Recolors mod remedies monotony by letting players pick their Leviathan Axe colors like it’s a lightsaber from Star Wars.
The mod also allows for other looks and colors for the Blades of Chaos. Players will be surprised at just how much a simple color change can freshen up the weapon’s appearance. Of course, it also comes in red and black, and there’s even a pink version.
10 Less Annoying Item Cards
While God of War’s UI is good, some players got a little too frustrated at the item cards that take too much time screen time. Thus, Less Annoying Item Cards was made and it helped a lot of players explore and loot more smoothly.
The mod is rather simple. It makes the item card notification disappear faster by reducing the downtime between its appearance and when players can press the skip button. The mod author was kind enough to include options regarding the speed of the delay.
9 God Of War NG Plus Save File (PS4 Import)
It’s hard to avoid watching story summaries, spoilers, or gameplay videos from God of War over the course of four years. It’s a little too late for PC players to enjoy all the surprises and twists so some might end up rushing the game instead to get to the good gameplay bits, like in NG Plus.
There’s no need for that once God of War players have already seen all the game has to offer on the consoles or streams. Some PC players can opt to download an imported save from PS4 with a nearly complete progression thanks to the God of War NG Plus Save File. It’s barely a mod but when one thinks about it, mods that give out all the items do almost the same thing anyway.
8 Invisible Shield
It’s still odd seeing Kratos with a shield and a defensive fighting style after his heydays in Greece being a relentless attacker (he did have a shield and spear weapon in the PSP games though). That’s probably why some players prefer a Kratos that has no shield or magical apparatus on his arm that blossoms out into a circular aegis.
The Invisible Shield mod serves this purpose by deleting Kratos’ shield model or the shield armband he wears. He can still use it, of course, and it will just magically disappear. This is especially more aesthetically pleasing once Kratos gets his good old Blades of Chaos as players will be able to appreciate those angsty chains much better.
7 Clean Invisible Armor And Wrist Armor
In addition to the shield, some Kratos die-hard fans might also prefer Kratos with his older getup which is practically just loincloth and greaves along with some arm bracers. It’s colder in Midgard, so that explains the pants and the extensive shoulder armor.
Clean Invisible Armor And Wrist Armor does away with the models of the said armor and makes Kratos feel young again. This mod makes him topless, exposing those intimidating Spartan pectorals as well as the majority of his Spartan tattoo. It can get confusing keeping track of what armor he’s wearing but at least he’s more photogenic now.
6 Less Fog And No Fog
There are times in God of War where some atmospheric effects look overdone, especially in Alfheim where the fog illuminates the place too much of obscures some of the scenery. For many, this can be an annoying effect and those with poor eyesight could use less or less dense fog.
Less Fog and No Fog are here to the rescue. It’s a pretty straightforward mod that either reduces the in-game fog or erases it completely, depending on player preference. One caveat with using this mod is that HDR won’t work anymore, which means less vivid or accurate colors.
5 Vulkan Launcher
While God of War is a well-optimized console port that runs well even on five-year-old hardware, players can actually squeeze out a few more frames of performance from the game. Turns out God of War on the PC didn’t have an official toggle for the Vulkan API which is highly advantageous for AMD graphics cards.
A quick tweak and DLL file modification enable that thanks to the Vulkan Launcher. It’s a nifty file that players drop in the game directory so that God of War will run on the Vulkan API. On Nvidia cards, the difference might be negligible but for those that use AMD cards, some users report around 10 FPS increase on average which is significant.
4 No TAA No DOF
God of War’s graphics are still beautiful even four years after its release thanks to the upgraded PC visuals. It does employ some polarizing graphical technologies, however, such as TAA or Temporal Antialiasing. While that one reduces the screen jaggies well, it also blurs everything.
As such, players that run the game on resolutions higher than 1080p might want to try out the No TAA No DOF mod which removes TAA, thus making the game’s visuals sharper. Additionally, it also removes Depth of Field which simulates how the eyes focus on objects. Each function has a separate toggle that players can turn on or off with ease.
3 GOW Regrade
Speaking of God of War’s visuals, there are graphics enthusiasts out there that probably find the game’s visuals a little too aged already. It certainly doesn’t compare well with what 2022 has on offer, especially the upcoming eye bleeders this year.
Thankfully, ReShade presets such as the GOW Regrade are here to make the game even prettier than it is already. GOW Regrade focuses on enhancing the colors, shadows, and tone mapping sharpness. It’s not as heavy or as excessive as other ReShade presets, just enough to enhance the game’s graphics— sometimes in a subtle manner.
2 Skip Playstation Intro Video On Startup
If there’s one mod that might be necessary for a less frustrating and smoother God of War experience, it’s probably this one. Skip PlayStation Intro Video On Startup is all about making the game launch considerably faster by removing the PlayStation intro.
The difference is around a few seconds and lets players go straight into the menu after clicking the God of War icon on the PC. It’s not like PC players don’t know which platform funded and made the game possible anyway. There is a skip button for it but even so, the system loading that video can cause a longer startup.
1 Kratos No Eyebrows No Beard Now New With Dead Eyes
Ever miss the old Kratos who shaved his beard so that his enemies can’t pull on it? That’s how it was back in the classical Greek era, and it has some practical reasons. Even in God of War 4, that beard can easily betray Kratos if an enemy grabs on to it.
So make him more combat-ready by having him shave it off while retaining a bit of manliness through a Tom Selleck caterpillar ‘stache. The Kratos No Eyebrows No Beard mod is just the thing for that. It does remove his eyebrows too, but that’s alright, just pretend that guy has too much testosterone that even his eyebrows weren’t spared from male pattern baldness.
God of Waris available on PS4 and PC.
